An itinerary which explains about a memorable getaway to Nagaland during the HORNBILL FESTIVAL held every year from 01st to 10th December.

  • Dimapur a city that is the most populous city in Nagaland and also the most densely populated city in the state takes pride in its historical monuments that are now in a state of ruin but having immense archaeological value.
  • Kohima is also known for its large cemetery known as the War Cemetery in Kohima for the Allied war dead maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
  • Kigwema is said to be a quaint old village of the Angami tribe. The heritage village, Kisama, which is also the site for the Hornbill festival, is a short hike away from here.
  • Hornbill International Rock Festival and Rock Contest are the highlights where various local and International rock bands perform and compete at the Indira Gandhi stadium.
  • This beautiful festival celebrated in the North East is named after the Indian Hornbill, the large and colorful forest bird which is displayed in folklore in most of the state’s tribes.
  • Festival highlights include the Traditional Naga Morungs Exhibition and sale of Arts and Crafts, Herbal Medicine Stalls, Food Stalls, Flower shows, and sales.
  • Cultural Medley – songs and dances, Fashion shows, Beauty Contest, Traditional Archery, Naga wrestling, Indigenous Games, and Musical concert. 
  • Traditional arts are also featured, with paintings, wood carvings, and sculptures by modern Naga artists on display.
  • Kigwema, a heritage village is a quaint old village of the Angami tribe. Kisama, which is also the site for the Hornbill festival, is a short hike away from here.
  • Khonoma was a center of Naga’s opposition to the British in the 19th century. The Khonoma Green Village is maintained by the Naga tribes is one of its kind in India. This village houses the Angami tribe who practice only agriculture and make a living through natural ways, without having a touch of infrastructural development to their lifestyle.

The site of one of the war’s bloodiest battles, Garrison Hill in April 1944, now has a War Cemetery with 2,337 graves and memorials to the soldiers who laid down their lives.

This village is popularly known for its environmental conscious community with proper sanitation and clean environment thus christened  as ‘GREEN VILLAGE’.

Before You Go

  • An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is required for Indian (Domestic) tourists entry into Nagaland.
  • Foreigners must, however, register themselves at the Foreigner Registration Office (District Superintendent of Police) within 24 hours of entry to each state. In addition, the permit exemption doesn’t apply to citizens of specified countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, and China, who continue to require prior approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs before their visit.
  • Carry adequate cash in Indian currency as ATMs might not be available in remote areas
  • Carry at least one of your identity proofs
  • Pack light woolens
  • Carry first aid kit, raincoats or umbrellas, and basic medicines
  • Nagaland being a less-traveled destination, it is low on infrastructure and hence travels and stay is expensive.
  • Allowing a local guide to accompany you is profitable as he/she will inform you of the local tribes and their customs whilst you enjoy the festival highlights. Else, you will end up just watching some troupes performing without understanding their cultural importance !!
